How does Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain prevent slips?
Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain contains microbeads which, once painted onto the deck and dried, create a slightly textured surface. This then increases friction and grip between the shoes or feet of anyone walking on the decking, therefore reducing the likelihood of that person slipping on the decking.
How to apply Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain
First you’ll need to prepare your decking area by sweeping away any surface dirt or debris. You’ll also need to remove any build up of fungi or algae using a product such as Cuprinol Pre Treatment Anti-Algae Decking Cleaner. You’ll also need to ensure that the deck is stripped back to bare wood, so any old stain, paint or varnish needs to be removed. Ensure the decking is dry before you begin applying the decking stain.
Stir your tin of Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain and apply it evenly along the grain using a brush or roller, avoiding any overlaps.
Can you spray Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain?
No, Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain is not meant to be used with a paint sprayer as it contains microbeads which can block the sprayer.

Preparation
Ensure decked areas are swept with a stiff brush or broom to remove all surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminates.
- All traces of mould, mildew, fungi and moss should be manually removed from the decking by scraping off, jet washing or sweeping with a stiff broom
- Affected areas should be treated with a designated decking cleaner.
- Once cleaned, we recommend the use of a suitable wood preservative that does not contain wax or oil
- Decking that has been previously coated with paint or other surface coating such as a decking stain must be stripped back to bare wood
- Any holes, gaps or splits in the surface of the decking can be filled with Cuprinol All Purpose Wood Filler or Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler
Decked areas must be completely dry before staining. This means that decking boards must have been stored in a warm, dry environment for several weeks with spacers to allow airflow between the boards. For decking already laid and in situ, it is recommended that the boards are first treated with a mould and mildew cleaner and then left to dry for a period of a week in warm, dry conditions to allow any moisture in the wood to evaporate. Applying this product to wood that is not adequately dry or where mould or algae spores are present in the timber may result in the stain prematurely failing and coming away from the wood. The recommended time for applying this product is in the warmer spring and summer months.
Cuprinol recommend that new decking boards are preserved and stained on all sides, edges and especially so on the cut ends before installation. This gives decking boards the best possible protection.
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain is due before the product has dried. If using more than one tin of anti-slip paint for decking, it's advisable to mix them together in a larger container or finish in a corner before starting a new tin.
Stir the contents of the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use to ensure a consistent finish.
- Apply 2-3 coats of decking stain evenly along the grain, avoiding overlaps, using a suitable brush
- When applying subsequent coats, allow each coat to dry fully before recoating
- On previously stained decking, touch up bare areas and allow to dry before finishing with further coats
Final colour will depend upon wood type, previous treatment and the number of coats applied. Avoid heavy wear for a few days after application.
Aftercare
Cleaning
Clean the treated decking with a suitable decking cleaner from time to time to avoid any reduction in performance.
Repair
To maintain the surface finish and its anti-slip properties, re-apply a fresh coat of Cuprinol Anti-Slip Decking Stain when the surface starts to show signs of wear, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
F.A.Q.
Here are some of the more commonly asked questions and answers about Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain. If you are looking for an answer to a more general decking stain or finishing question, take a look at our decking treatment FAQ page.
How does Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain Work?
Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain works because it contains 'microbeads' within the stain. When dry on the surface of the deck, these microbeads create a slightly textured surface which increases friction between shoes, feet and the decking. Increased friction means that there is less chance of slippage, hence the name 'anti-slip decking stain'
Are anti-slip decking stains the same as non-slip decking stains?
Although anti-slip decking stains will indeed reduce the potential for slipping, as compared to a standard decking stain or treatment, as far as we are aware, there is no such thing as a non-slip decking stain. Although these products will certainly help to reduce the chances of slipping, nothing will guarantee a slip-free decking surface.
Is this product also known as Cuprinol anti slip decking paint?
Although this product is called Cuprinol Anti-Slip Decking Stain, some of our customers have said that it is more like a decking paint as it produces an opaque finish that covers the colour and character of the wood.
Do you sell Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain Urban Slate?
Yes. We sell a complete range of Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain Colours including Urban Slate. These can be seen at the top of this page
Can this be used on composite decking?
Unfortunately not, this product will not be able to adhere into composite. We have a product that can be used for composite which is the Osmo Polymer Composite Maintenance Oil, although this is only a clear option.
Can this be used around a pond?
If the product is applied on dry timber, away from water and left to cure before placing by a pond then yes. It must be fully cured first. The timber must not be submerged as this will break the product down quite quickly.
My decking is a bit 'patchy' in colour. Will the Anti-Slip Decking Stain cover imperfections well?
The pigment in this product will certainly make the colour of the decking more uniform but we can't guarantee that it will cover all imperfections. Give the area a light sand before hand to help even out and blend in patches and then trial a test area.
Can I spray the Cuprinol Anti-Slip Deck Stain?
We would not recommend spraying this product. Brush or roller application is advisable.
Do you have to treat the decking with a wood preserver before applying the Anti-Slip Decking Stain?
To ensure the longevity of the timber, we recommend applying a preservative treatment such as Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear before application of the decking stain.
How would you describe the colour of city stone? Is it cream or grey?
It is one of their paler shades. Colour can be subjective and will differ in opinion from person to person. I would recommend having a search online to see how it has come out in other projects to get a better understanding.
